Budget Cuts
|
Letter from Sheriff Jackson Coos County is currently faced with a financial crisis that will affect services provided by all County departments and the Sheriff’s Office for years to come. The County Commissioners have indicated that the County’s current 5.8 million dollar loss of revenue from O&C rural timber funds has equated to an estimated loss of 100 employees from 400. In order to balance the loss of O&C revenue funds, the County has required a reduction of approximately 17 employees from respective department heads and 38 employees from the Sheriff’s Office alone. Due to these recent cuts in staff, the community and county government face service reductions that will require setting goals and priorities to accomplish our future mission. Because of these current service reductions, the Sheriff’s office has requested assistance from local law enforcement agencies, along with State Police to assist us in responding to emergency (9-1-1) calls. As a Sheriff’s Office, we will continually demonstrate that we are fiscally responsible and we find personal and professional honor in effectively protecting your life, rights, property, business and the continual growth of your community. Elected officials that you, the citizens of this County, have placed run county government into office to perform specific duties in order to keep the county functioning. As a County, you have elected a Sheriff who is responsible for providing law enforcement services to its citizens. As your elected Sheriff, my attention has been and will continue to be your ongoing safety by employing men and women who will provide professional policing that will give you, this citizen of this County, a safe and secure community and sense of well-being. Unfortunately, due to the current revenue shortage and lack of personnel, our community will be required to experience a different policing method. These different or newly required policing methods will include a lack of a deputy’s response to certain calls and be replaced with a report form mailer that will require your completion and return to the Sheriff’s Office. This does not mean that the Sheriff’s Office is lacking in the way it will do business, but that it has been required to find a smarter or more progressive way to do business. Because of this new or progressive way of doing business, we as a community, must be aware that crime and criminals directly and indirectly may have a negative impact on all of our lives. After all, who wants to invest in property that may be located in or near a crime invested area? A well-funded countywide law enforcement would contribute to your property value and community growth; and reduce other costs that would likely skyrocket and prevent criminals from preying on you and your family. Sheriff Andy Jackson. |

| LOSS OF MANPOWER DUE TO BUDGET CUTS WILL GREATLY IMPACT SERVICES PROVIDED TO COOS COUNTY RESIDENTS |
| Due to Congress not
reauthorizing the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act,
Coos County has an approximate $7 million dollar shortfall which will result
in the eliminations of positions and many lay offs to balance the 2007-2008
Fiscal Coos County Budget. The illustration to the right shows just how drastically the Sheriff’s Office will have to cut services to Coos County residents due to the reduction in funding. As further possible cuts go deeper into the budget, services to the public will diminish accordingly. Responses to offenses will be cut back progressively from the bottom up if the staffing levels are reduced any further. |
