Deputy on scene's report

On 12-12-04, at approximately 1453 hours, the Coos County Sheriff's Office responded to 56372 Fat Elk Road to investigate a missing person(s) report. I contacted David S. Cain, the father of the two missing children. Tyler Cain, age 5, and Kristopher Cain, age 7, were missing since 1100 hours. They were supposed to be hiding for one hour in the woods behind their Fat Elk home and had not returned as of 1453 hours. A quick two mile rural neighborhood canvass was completed by this deputy. All residents due northwest of the victim’s home were contacted and advised of the missing kids. At about 1520 I made contact with a neighbor who had seen the kids’ dogs several hours earlier which gave us a direction of travel. Several hours later into the canvass, the same neighbor who had seen the dogs called 9-1-1 indicating they went to the far back of their property near Roseburg Lumber timber ground and stated that they heard the kids yell back after yelling for them. A search began by this deputy and four other neighbors as well as Coos County Search and Rescue being enroute. At approximately 1700 hours, and near dark, the two kids and their dogs were located in a ravine in a stand of ten foot tall reprod timber.

The children were extremely cold with minor hypothermia. They were packed out by a neighbor and myself and returned home at dark at about 1730 hours. Due to the elements, death would have been likely had they not been found.
