COMPLETION OF DPSST POLICE ACADEMY WITHIN LAST 12 MONTHS OR MINIMUM BASIC POLICE CERTIFICATE ISSUED BY DPSST REQUIRED

1. Classification Title: Deputy Sheriff (Certified)

2. Working Title: Deputy Sheriff

3. Department: Coos County Sheriff’s Office

4. Positions are: Full Time

5. The purpose of this position: Work as full time Deputy Sheriff with a strong will to provide service to the citizens of Coos County and the State of Oregon., Criminal Patrol or Corrections as assigned by the Sheriff. Provide protection for the citizens of Coos County and the State of Oregon; Arrest and detain persons who have committed crimes; Enforce traffic laws; Investigate crimes and write reports; maintain security and control of jail; transport inmates; maintain security in the courts.

6. Essential functions of position:

Strong will to provide a service to the citizens of Coos County and the State of Oregon

Must have ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

Enforces all Laws of the United States, Oregon, and Coos County

Operates a variety of motor vehicles and equipment

Use of physical force to control persons

Possible use of deadly physical force

Investigates crimes and complaints

Testifies in court proceedings

Maintains jail security, court security and all duties involved in the Police and Corrections field.

7. Minor duties assigned to position:

Engage in rigorous physical activities

Read and write numerous documents and reports

Handle numerous human relations problems and situations

Conducts or directs search of lost individuals

Conducts search of jail and persons

8. Working conditions of position:

Rotating shift work (various graves, days, swings, holidays, weekends)

Use of computers

Work in inclement weather

Long periods of sitting, standing, walking for long distances, ascending and descending stairs, walking in rough terrain Work in confined areas of Jail

9. Required special skills, licenses, certificates, etc.:

Successful completion of Oregon DPSST Police Academy within last 12 months or possession of Basic Police Certificate issued by Oregon DPSST. Successful completion of background investigation.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Current Oregon Drivers License

10. Operation of various motor vehicles and equipment is a requirement of this position.

Variety of motor vehicles and equipment Electronic switch panels Hand guns, Long guns, Telephones Computers, Police Duty Gear, Electronic Finger printing equipment, Communication radios, Office equipment
