    A motor vehicle capable of off highway travel that weighs more than 800 pounds. Operators are required by law to posses:

             As of January 1, 2000, ATV permits became the responsibility of the Oregon Parks and Recreation.  Permits are available through vendors, State Park Area officers, as well as the Hebro Ranger Station and Oregon Dunes NRA Office.  For more information and the current list of vendors statewide, call the Oregon Parks and Recreation Office at 1-800-551-6949.

    Off-Highway Vehicles - Permits

    Oregon requires all vehicles operating off-highway at the Oregon Dunes and Sand Lake to posses Oregon ATV permits for Class I, II, and Class III vehicles. The permits cost $10 and are valid for two years. Vehicles registered in OHV programs from other states are honored for 60 days. Out-of-state visitors that do not have OHV permit or registration programs may purchase a temporary permit. You can still transfer title on a recently purchased used, or title a new Class I OHV through the Oregon DMV.

    Class I OHV

    A motorized, off-highway vehicle 50" wide or less that weighs 800 pounds or less, travels on 3 or 4 tires, and has a saddle or seat. Rider are required by law to posses:

    Helmet (Rider or passenger under 18 years of age)
    Maintained muffler of 93 dB or less in the Oregon Dunes, 97 dB or less at Sand Lake
    Working headlights/taillights after sunset and before sunrise
    ATV permit or decal.
    Red flag displayed 9 feet above ground
    Valid driver's license, ATV operator's permit (available at Oregon DMV, or must be accompanied by an adult with one of the above..
    ATV permit or decal.
    Maintained muffler of 93 dB or less the Oregon Dunes, 97 dB in Sand Lake.
    Working headlights/taillights after sunset and before sunrise
    Red flag displayed 9 feet above ground
    Valid driver's license
    Fire extinguisher -Roll bar/enclosure designed to protect your head
    A seat and seat belt for each passenger
    If equipped with windshield, windshield wipers are required
    Motorcycle helmet (under 18 years of age)
    ATV permit or decal.
    Maintained muffler 93 dB or less the Oregon Dunes, 97 dB or less at Sand Lake.
    Red flag displayed 9 feet above ground (Effective October 1st, 2001)
    Working headlights/taillights after sunset and before sunrise
    Chain guard/foot pegs/brakes
    Valid driver's license, off-highway motorcycle operators permit, or be accompanied by an adult with one of the above. Children 7 years and younger may not operate a Class IIII vehicle on public lands.
